Tasks such as the update of components, the insertion of security updates or monitoring should be further automated. It is recommended to use only one automation tool (SAP Solution Manager or SAP LVM). Custom solutions and scripts should not be used or replaced with standard tools if possible, because otherwise different script languages and script versions will have to be managed, resulting in a lot of maintenance. In addition to purely administrative tasks, SAP administrators are also responsible for communication tasks. They work with the company's internal support services to find ways to help users solve and avoid problems and pitfalls they may encounter when using SAP solutions. For internal purposes, the SAP administrator also prepares documentation to look for errors and try to address the root causes. If necessary, he communicates with the company's decision makers so that improvements, adjustments and optimizations can be made to the SAP software.
Planning, coordination and installation of SAP Basis upgrades, support packages and patches
The Technical Lead functions as the work package leader or sub-project manager within the SAP basis when the project is the focus of the SAP basis. The Technical Lead will become more important in the future as the SAP basis acts as a technology consultant and more projects and project activities are expected in the future. This role must be filled more and more often. Due to the increased demands, this role and the associated activities must be professionalised through training and further training.
When I began my career administering SAP ERP on Oracle in the early 1990s, running a database required far more knowledge. An Oracle administration expert with a decade of experience understood perhaps only about 5% of what the database required.
